Why work in High Definition?

Sony PMW-EX3 XDCAM EX
CineAlta High Definition Digital Camcorder

This is a tapeless version of Sony's top-of-the-line digital cinema cameras. It is uncompromisingly HD from its three full-raster 1/2" 1920x1080 CMOS imagers to its 35mbps variable bitrate recording format. We especially like using it with our Depth of Field Attachment.

The camera can shoot in true 24p, 30p, 60i, 50i or 25p frame rates, in 1920x1080 (native) or 1280x720 standards. It can do 1440x1080i HDV. That's pretty much all High Definition frame sizes and rates. It will even do Slo-Mo, timelapse, and the non-American PAL format in all the above variations.

Recording onto solid-state media is a joy! No dropouts, tape jams, noise. Impervious to vibration. And with a pair of our tiny 32GB recording chips we can roll non-stop at the highest quality for almost 4 hours. (We can hot-swap chips and roll perpetually!) With almost 5 hours of recording media in our kit there's no need to risk your footage and slow down the shoot day by unloading in the field.

Final Cut Pro
High Definition Editing System

We edit on a Final Cut Pro nonlinear system with specialized editing hardware and software to give you the very best image quality from any format, from VHS to 10-bit uncompressed 1920x1080 High Definition.

Our best camera is tapeless, so we have experience with a tapeless workflow. (The key is a falut-tolerant RAID-5 hard drive array for data security plus an offline backup system for full redundancy.) But tape is no problem: our in-house tape decks include DVCam, MiniDV, HDV, BetacamSP, S-VHS, VHS, and U-MATIC. For other tape flavors we rent the appropriate machine.

Our suite of software and know-how allows us to do anything from touching up photos to morphing faces. Our edit room is quiet and comfortable and we even have a voice-over booth in-house.

D-35 Camera

Sony DXC-D35
Standard Definition Digital Camera

Like the hands that operate it, this camera is a pro. It can shoot widescreen and record digitally to DVCam tape or in analog mode to the Betacam SP format. With our DVCam recorder the camera is a nice 1-piece camcorder, capable of shooting up to 3 hrs. non-stop. For Betacam recording we use our separate BVW-50 BetacamSP recorder, the old workhorse of the broadcast industry.

Camera Dolly
Available for Rent
$ 65/day*

Our camera dolly is basically a very sturdy platform which rides on sixteen roller-skate-type wheels. The track is made of plastic ABS pipe joined from 6-foot sections; we have 40’ of it. The dolly platform is 30x48”, but two running boards extend it to 48x48”. It will easily carry our jib (pictured) and a cameraman. To use on an uneven, outdoor terrain or to drive the dolly around corners you must use standard steel track, available for rent elsewhere.

Camera Jib
Available for Rent
$ 125/day*

This is a simple, portable jib with a lot of load capacity (arm is rated to carry up to 75 lbs). The 46" arm will travel 48" from the lowest point to the highest, so for example if your pivot point is five feet from the ground (as pictured), the camera can move between an elevation of 3 feet and 7 feet off the ground. And of course the arm can rotate 360 degrees.

The jib travels in a 14"x9"x57" case (pictured), in addition to a tripod and a set of counterweights. You put the fluid head from your own tripod on the arm, pop your camera on and you're good to go. This system does not use a remote-controlled camera head.
